In the last 20 years Weathervanes of Maine has designed and built thousands of custom weathervanes for things such as different breeds of dogs, types of fish, birds, boats , motorcycles and much more. If they don’t have what their customer is looking for they will build it.
The Wells-based company has been making weathervanes, cupolas and finials for the home and garden, since being started by William (Bill) and Paul McElvain over 20 years ago. Both have over 30 years of experience and started Weathervanes of Maine following working for their father William.
Their catalogue has been built due to offering custom weathervane designs that can begin by easily sending the staff a photo. From there it is then meticulously designed by Paul and recreated in the form of a weathervane.
“We work one on one with customers every step of the way to create unique designs and get their dimensions just right for items such as antique cars and airplanes,” says manager Danny Robinson.
Some of the other weathervane designs in their collection include religious weathervanes such as Jesus or an angel, special interest weathervanes like gargoyles, dragons, 3D watering cans and lighthouses. They also produce people weathervanes that include designs for golfers, skiers, mermaids and firemen.
The size and variety of their collection is the result of being in business for so long and by adding to it every year. Another factor that has contributed to the growth of their catalogue was being one of the first in the business to go online, which at the same time coincided with a high demand for custom design.
Robinson said nothing in terms of requests surprises them anymore.
“We have done thousands of custom weathervanes and we’ve done some crazy stuff,” he added. “King Kong was pretty weird because it’s not your normal weathervane request.”
Other unique custom designs include Mary Poppins, the USS Enterprise from Star Trek, antique cars and airplanes.
All weathervanes are handmade and constructed to last using 100% pure copper, painted steel, or aluminum. The copper is weather resistant and maintenance free. Clients who choose copper or steel, rooster or eagle, a standard size or a large, are offered the freedom of choice with hundreds of weathervane styles. They can also practically build their own weathervane to fit their needs and desires by adding arrows and other unique weathervane options.
The custom designs are also sold with an accompanying cupola which Weathervanes of Maine also builds. Metal cupolas can come in square, hexagon, octagon shape and be built steel, copper or vinyl. There are also shed cupolas designed for smaller buildings like pool houses, boat houses and course sheds. Weathervanes of Maine also provides the freedom for custom cupolas that are manufactured to a client’s specifications.
There are other companies who offer custom weathervanes, but not as many as there used to be due to market and economy changes, which have made it more expensive.
“We used to get tonnes of them (custom designs) to the point where you had a year’s wait,” says Robinson adding Weathervanes of Maine doesn’t do as many as they used to.
